Two Main IUD Options
Hormonal IUD :​​ Hormonal IUDs are the most effective form of reversible birth control. It is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy for up to 5 years. They have an added benefit of decreasing, or stopping, your period. For this reason, they are also used to control painful and heavy periods. There are two options, the Mirena and the Kyleena.​
Copper IUD : The copper IUD is a non-hormonal option of reversible Birth control. It is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy for up to 8 years. It may increase your period flow and cramps for the first few months after insertion. However, if you have light periods to begin with, or do not want hormonal contraception, this is a great option. It is also the most effective form of emergency contraception, if inserted within 5 days of unprotected sex.
